Winning Cover
I have been submitting artwork to Korn for over a year now, and I had a t-shirt deal with them in
June. The piece went all the way to production until it came to a screeching halt when Fieldy
backed out of the deal....then the kontest rolled around. I knew what Fieldy didn't like about
the t-shirt piece, so I drew up a new picture in sort of the same format that was a hundred times
better (in my opinion). I submitted seven different pieces in all, and they chose the one that
was in the same format as the would be t-shirt design. I call the piece "freedom".
It is an action oriented piece that goes a little something like this: The guys are locked down in the insane asylum with strait jackets and their mouths zipped shut because they have a positive voice that is usually ignored and locked away. The media often deems their music to be vulgar and profane. They never take into consideration the lyrical content and meanings behind the music. This aspect of the piece reflects censorship. There is however a need for them to break free within the picture. They have a fed up look across their faces, and I tried to insinuate that they are about to bust outta that motherfucker. There is forshadowing of this depicted outside, with the birds flying near the sun. Free as a bird...get it. It is done in my style that I have developed over the years, a hybrid of cartoon, anime, hip-hop, horror and sickness. All that and a little of the Brad fu flavor, and you've got the Issues runner up cover. |

In the second piece, (my favorite), one third of the picture is a very angry face, screaming, a father figure, if you will. It is very impact based, with the red shading to depict fury. The other two thirds of the piece is a child listening to his headphones crying. He is secluded and alone in a world of hate. The blue color scheme represents depression. The music is his only escape, he is the child figure of the picture. This picture is very powerful and personal to me. It represents anger leading to depression leading to an outlet of hope. I call this piece "restraint".
I am indebted to the guys for selecting my work, they mean the world to me. I cannot afford education at the present time due to the fact that I must endlessly work to survive. For them to show me this love and respect as an artist is the highest level of payment I could ever receive. Korn's music got me through the rough times in the past, and I'm sure it will continue to in the future...thank you guys.
About the putting together of the piece...
I used pilot pens and chartpack sooper phatty markers.
